Four-Four-Foto Meme

Two different people (LiPA and ReizaM) have tagged me for this meme, so here I go:

The rules are:

  1. Open the fourth file that you store pictures in.
  2. Post the fourth photo in that file.
  3. Explain the photo.
  4. Tag four other bloggers.
My photos are in various places, and if I used the "MyPictures" directory I got a really boring picture of coral or something from Shrike's visit to the Aquarium with her sister, niece and nephew. Also, I never put anything in that directory anymore, so blah on it.

So, I used the directory I put all my blog photos in and went to the 4th folder, then the 4th folder in there, and then the 4th photo and got . . . .

Peeper Nursing!

Actually, that came out of a whole folder of nursing photos - the ones I pulled together to make the video.

Top Ten Reasons I Am Excited to Stay Home With My Family This Coming Weekend

If you read very many blogs written by women, you'll know that all the cool kids have packed up their little black dresses, kissed their spouses and kiddos goodbye and headed off to Chicago today for BlogHer '09.

I've never gone, but best I can tell, it's like the world's coolest, geekiest, three-day-long slumber party. With booze.

Of course, that's not something you can do with a nine-month-old nursing baby. Oh, but wait, Amalah and Ezra and Amalah's boobs are there. Well, shit.

Someday, after we win the Lottery (I've got high hopes for Saturday's Powerball) I'd love to go to BlogHer, but in the meantime, I'd love to be one of fifteen non-BlogHer-attending bloggers to win $100 Cozi.com for telling you why I'm happy to be staying home this weekend instead.

The winners will be the bloggers who have the most comments on their Top Ten Reasons post, so help me out here, folks!

Top Ten Reasons I Am Excited to Stay Home With My Family This Coming Weekend

  1. I could win $100 from Cozi.com - and I'll have all that free time to check out their website and learn more about how they're going to help me get my shit together.
  2. Shrike has five days off, which we get all get to spend together!
  3. CapitalCity PrideFest is Saturday. I've been every year since we've moved to BlueState, and this time we get to take Peeper!
  4. Even with a night-owl baby, I'd probably get more sleep at home.
  5. We finally have groceries in the house!
  6. We're planning to go out to dinner with our new friends - the ones we picked up in the grocery store a few weeks ago.
  7. It would be a shame to make all those other Mommy Bloggers feel bad because my kid is so much cuter than theirs.
  8. Saves me the humiliation of acting like / sounding like / proving myself to be a complete ass in front of my blog heroes.
  9. I just finished flying / traveling alone with Peeper. I am not up to doing it again so soon.
  10. Did I mention that I could win $100 if enough of you leave comments on this post?

Manic Monday #39

  1. How long does it take you to get out of bed in the morning?
At least thirty minute of snoozing. Shrike hates that.

  2. Do you usually sleep on one side of the bed or another?
I sleep on the left, Shrike is on the right (if we're laying on our backs).

  3. Something you wish to accomplish before the end of the year.
Survive our first month or so of parenting.

A Stolen Meme

I don't have much to say this evening, so I've stolen this little meme from Sunday Stealing.

  1. When was the last time you cried?
This afternoon, in the card aisle at Target.

  2. Were you named after anyone?
Anonymama, LadyKay and I all have the same first name. Only Anonymama actually goes by it on a regular basis.

  3. What is your favorite lunchmeat?
Deli-sliced honey ham, I suppose. Unless I can somehow count cheese as a lunchmeat.

  4. Do you have kids?
    One, in my uterus.

  5. If you were another person would you be friends with you?
I would like to think so, but I am rather annoying.

  6. Do you use sarcasm a lot?
    Who me? Sarcasm? Never!

  7. Do you still have your tonsils?
Yep. I have most of my original parts (missing two wisdom teeth), but some of them (my stomach/intestines) have been rearranged.

  8. Would you bungee jump?
    Not no, but hell no.

  9. What is your favorite cereal?
    Reese's Puffs
Sidebar: I had to explain to Shrike today that, when she's going to the grocery store and I ask her to "Get me a box of one of the yummy kind of Cheerios," I'm not referring to multi-grain. Yummy = Sugary. And, while we're definite things, if it ain't chocolate, it ain't candy.
  10. Do you untie your shoes when you take them off?
Only if I have it. I generally slip off tennis shoes and my dressier shoes if I can, but I can't get my boots off without untying.

  11. Do you think you are strong enough to be with me?
I believe the question is, are you strong enough to be with me?

  12. What is your favorite ice cream?
On my, that depends on my mood. Usually something very chocolatey, and possibly with peanut butter.

  13. What is the first thing you notice about people?
I guess I notice the over-all "big picture" first, then start seeing the details later. The first time or two I rarely notice enough details to recognize them on a second seeing. I am awful about that.

  14. Red or pink?
I would've said red a few months ago, but I've become rather partial to pink lately. Especially in tiny sizes.

  15. What is your least favorite thing about yourself?
My inability to keep my damn mouth shut.

  16. Who do you mess with the most?
    Shrike.

  17. What was the last thing you ate?
A leftover barbecue cheddar slider (baby hamburger) from TGI Friday's. But if you ask me again in about fifteen minutes, my answer will be a chocolate-ish peanut butter sundae. That's no-sugar-added vanilla ice cream, with melted peanut butter drizzled over it, and some Carnation Instant Breakfast powder sprinkled on top. Shrike will have it without the CIB.

  18. What are you listening to right now?
    The tappity-tap-tap of my keyboard.

  19. Who was the last person you talked to on the phone?
I left a message for a seamstress who is probably going to be recovering the glider cushions for us. The last two-person conversation was a call-back to a guy who called yesterday, looking for an Obama yard sign.

  20. Why aren't you married?
Because it's not legal in BlueState.

  21. Last movie you watched?
Do the baby-having videos in our childbirth class count? Before that, I don't remember. Probably something really bad that Shrike rented. Although, it might have been the most recent Pirates of the Caribbean or Elizabeth. She also rented those, but they were actually good.

  22. What did you dream about last night?
Oh crap, I don't remember. I do remember that when I woke up, I was still thinking about it and sorting it out and all, but I can't remember what it was about.

  23. What book are you reading?
Nothing at the moment, but I just finished listening to the audiobook of Stephen Colbert's I Am America (And So Can You!). I highly recommend it, especially if you are a Colbert fan.

  24. Summer or winter?
Summer in BlueState, winter back home in Texas.

  25. Hugs or kisses?
Chocolate or affection? Either way, I'm a fan of both.

  26. Do you have any special talents?
    Maybe?

  27. What are they?
I'm pretty good at organizing people and planning things. Organizing myself, not so much.

  28. What did you watch on TV last?
TiVo'd episodes of Ellen and Saturday Night Live.

  29. What is your favorite sound?
At the moment, Peeper's heartbeat on the Doppler/monitor.

  30. Rolling Stones or The Beatles?
    The Beatles
And, just for the heck of it, I'm tagging some folks to answer the same questions, either on your own blog, if you have one, or in the comments:
  1. Shrike
  2. Anonymama
  3. LadyKay
  4. Frappa
  5. LiPA

Manic Monday #38

  1. What is one thing you admire about each of your parents?
As I've mentioned before, Anonydaddy is a doctor, and I really admire the way he always seems to go that step beyond for his patients, whether it's taking the extra time to listen to their concerns, medical and otherwise, or adjusting a little old lady's insulin dosage meal by meal, based on how much she was able to eat today.

Of course, he's got a great reputation around town, especially among the old folks that he treats.

Once, a few years ago, Anonymama was sitting in her gynecologist's office and overheard one woman say to another, "That's Dr. Anonydaddy's wife over there. Dr. J must be really good, if he takes care of her!"

(Did I get the story right, Anonymama?)

Let me tell you a couple of stories about Anonymama, and her politics.

She still attends the Southern Baptist church that we went to when I was a kid (I got over it), and now teaches a Sunday School class, of older ladies.

I asked her once, "How can you
do that, given your political beliefs?"

"It's easy," she said, "I just leave out the things I don't agree with."

My favorite example is the time that she threw out the entire suggested lesson for "Sanctity of Life Sunday" and, instead, talked about the need to fund stem cell research!

A few weeks ago, she asked me to send her an Obama bumper sticker, and I offered her a button as well, saying "I have 'Women for Obama,' or 'Seniors for Obama,' or . . . . "

"No, just send me a regular one - I don't want to be labeled."

I told her I would send a couple of stickers and a couple of buttons, so they could each have one.

She said, "Daddy probably won't put a sticker on his car, because he doesn't want to have to talk to people about it. But I kind of
    enjoy getting in their faces!"

Speaking of her sticker, the other day, she was walking out of a meeting, when a woman whom she'd only met recently spotted it and commented on it.

At first, Anonymama thought the woman was appalled, but the realized that she was just surprised, and pleased, to find that she was also a Democrat.

In the conversation that followed, the other woman said, "Well, I have two friends who have gay daughters, and I think they ought to have the same rights as everyone else!"

Anonymama told her, "Actually, you have three friends who do!"

  2. Which parts of your home do you like best?
The sunroom is what sold us on the house when we were first looking at it but, ironically, that's become the dog's room, and the place where all the old crappy furniture is. I still like it though, and I also love sitting in our backyard on a summer evening.

At the moment though, the room that I just can't get enough of is Peeper's - I can't wait til we've got it completely decorated. And have a baby to put in it!

  3. Which would you prefer and why: To have every stoplight turn green upon your arrival for the rest of your life or to have one week of the best sex any person ever had?
Let's just say that I've had some pretty damn good long weekends that nearly killed me, so I don't know that I could handle an entire week like that. I think it might be safest to go with the green lights.

(Oh dear. I hope Anonymama quit reading about two paragraphs ago when I stopped talking about her.)

Manic Monday #37

Hey, the memes are back! Well, at least for today. We'll see how it goes beyond that.

  1. Pick out the most important item you have in your purse/wallet and tell me why it's important to you.
Hmm, let's see. . . ID, credit cards, insurance cards, business cards, two dollars. Meh. Aha - my voter registration card! I'd say that's the most important thing in there, because it give me the power to (along with a few million other people) change the world.

  2. What would you take from your house if you knew it would be flooded tomorrow?
Ew, I should refer this one to Anonymama and LadyKay; they've gotten way too good at answering this in real life, lately. Based on what I've learned from them - people, pets, clothes, food, medications for everyone, important papers, checkbook, laptop, cell phones and chargers. What am I forgetting?

  3. If you were stuck in a room for an hour with a chalk board, what would you draw on it?
Probably nothing. I'm not much of a drawer.

A Meme About Us

I found this here, and thought, "Hey, it's been a while since I've memed!"

Where did you meet?
On the Interwebs. Specifically, a lesian message board called "The Shark's Den." I have no idea what two straight girls like us were doing there . . . ;-)

How long did you date?
We communicated online and by phone for about three months before we met in person. Then, it was about another three months before Shrike actually moved to Texas to live with me. That was a little more than ten years ago, and the rest is history.

How old is she?
Shrike is thirty-nine. (Fifty weeks younger than me.)

Who said “I love you” first?
Oh, gosh, I'm not sure about that, but I think it was her.

First there was the email progression from "love ya" to "love you" to, I'm pretty sure, "I love you."

Then, the first time we talked on the phone, we both chickened out about saying it.

Later, via email, we talked about how we were chicken. The next time we talked on the phone, I'm pretty sure she said it, prefaced with something like, "Ok, I'm just going to say it . . . ."

Funny thing is, that was all before we'd admitted that there was really something going on, and we were just pretending to be friends. Um, yeah. Right.

She was definitely the first one to actually "confess her love." I, of course, reciprocated immediately.

Who is taller?
I am, by about four inches.

Who is smarter?
It depends on the subject. I'm better and math and such, but she knows were to put commas and how to spell wierd weird.

Whose temper is worse?
Hers.

Who does the laundry?
She does laundry and trash. I do dishes (except when I don't) and the litterbox (except when I'm pregnant).

Who sleeps on the right side of the bed?
Our right, when we're in the bed, or your right, if you're standing at the foot, looking at us?

(Why are you standing at the foot of our bed, looking at us, anyway? That's kind of rude.)

From our perspective, she is on the right, and I'm on the left. And BigGaloot is often in the middle. Or on top of us. And MamaCat is walking on our heads.

Who pays the bills?
Her check pays for most of them (except the mortgage, car note and home equity loan) but I actually handle the checkbook. Most of the bills, technically, are on auto-pay, though - which is wonderful.

Who cooks dinner?
TGI Fridays.

Seriously, if anyone does any actual cooking, it's usually me. Unless it's a special occassion and she makes something like Anonymama's Peanut Soup.

Or when we grill - then it's a joint effort. We've done that enough that we each have our roles down, and it's like a well-oiled machine.

She gets the meat marinating early in the day, then when it's time to cook, she lights the grill while I cut and kabob my veggies (usually onion and pepper). When the food is ready to go on, I usually do the monitoring, basting and turning and she passes the final judgement on whether the meat is done.

Who drives when you are together?
Shrike does. These days, we take my car, but she still drives. Which is sort of an adventure, because she's still not 100% comfortable with the whole shifting thing. Actually, it's really just first-fucking-gear-dammit that gives her trouble.

Who is more stubborn?
That would be me.

Who kissed whom first?
I kissed her.

Who is the first to admit to being wrong?
Usually me, I think.

Whose parents do you see the most?
Hers, because they live five minutes away, while mine are half way across the country. We probably communicate with mine more, though, because Anonymama reads and comments on the blog.

Who proposed?
The very first time, she did. Then we ended up postponing the wedding a couple of times, and I'm really not sure who made the call to actually move forward with the plans when we did.

It might have been when our niece was born, and Shrike decided that maybe having a baby wouldn't be such a bad idea, and I told her that we had to be married first.

Okay, "married."

Of course, that was 7.5 years ago, so evidently there were a few other things we had to take care of along the way, too.

What’s her best physical attribute?
I love her "cheeseburgers" (don't ask) and her cute, tiny little ears. Also her eyes. And other things that I won't mention. (See above, re: my mother reads this blog.)

Who has more friends?
I do, because I actually like people.

What are you most proud of her for?
Being with me.

Who has more siblings?
Me. I have an older sister (LadyKay) and a younger brother. Shrike has one sister, a year older than her.

Who wears the pants in the family?
Well, I'm the bossy bitch around here, so I guess that would be me.

Literally, of course, we both do.

Because we're dykes that way.

Manic Monday #36

  1. Are you a talker or a listener? Is it ever possible to really be both?
I'd like to think that I'm a good listener too, but I'm definitely more of a talker.
  2. Do you think God has a sense of humor?
Perhaps a twisted sense of humor.

  3. Do you believe in love at first sight? Have you ever experienced it?
How about love before first sight?

I think it might be a stretch to say that Shrike and I fell in love at the first sight of each other's typed words, but there was an immediate connection within the first couple of exchanges, and I know that, crazy as it sounds, I was in love with her before we even saw each other's photos - and long before we met in person.

(A very, very different kind of "in love" from what I feel now, ten years later, but definitely in love already.)

Here's a funny story about that, actually.

When we'd been emailing for a few weeks, and had not yet declared our love for each other, but were pretty much about too, I mailed her a photo.

(Neither of us had digital cameras or scanners at that point, so emailing photos wasn't an option.)

She told me that when it arrived, she was scared to open it and look at it, but "Little did I know, I had nothing to worry about."

Now, I knew was nervous about seeing her photo, because I kept thinking, "Oh my God, what if she's not cute, and I'm not attracted to her. That would be awful, because I already love her!"

(Except maybe not quite so consciously as that.)

So, I figured her concerns were the same, and was flattered when she said that.

Years later, we were reminiscing about this, and talking about how nervous we were about looking at the photos, and she said, "I was intimidated, because I was afraid you'd be like totally hot or something, and way out of my league."

    I was all, "Ha ha, yeah . . . HEY - wait a minute!"

Manic Monday #35

  1. If your personality had to be summed up as a sandwich, what kind of sandwich would you be?
Ham and cheese. With a side of nuts.
  2. If you knew that someone was dying, but they didn’t know, would you tell them the truth or deceive them about it?
That would depend on who it was, and what my relationship was with them. It may or may not be my place to decide things like that.

  3. Do you dress the same when you are depressed as you do when you are very happy?
I wasn't sure about the answer to this, so I asked Shrike. She said, "Yeah, we both dress shitty all the time."

Manic Monday #36

  1. What is your ideal age?
When I turned 28, I declared that it sounded like a good age, and I was just going to "stay there." Then I realized that, around 35, people would start thinking, "Wow, she's lookin' pretty rough for 28!" so I gave up on that idea.

To tell you the truth, as completely fucking surreal as it is, so far, 40 is shaping up to be pretty good.
  2. What is your best excuse for being late?
My most believable excuse is "I ran into traffic" because I drive about 40 miles down the interstate to get to work each day.

My most realistic "excuse" is "I'm a lazy bum and hit the snooze alarm too many times.

My favorite all-around excuse right now, though, is "I'm making a human. What did you do today?"

  3. If you had to give yourself a nickname what would it be?
    Um, Whozat?

Manic Monday #35

  1. You have accomplished a difficult task and hear someone else taking the credit. How do you deal with the situation?

I would certainly be pissed, and depending on who it was (a competitor? my boss? a friend?) I might or might not say something. I might ask someone else to point out that it was my work, not theirs, rather than saying something myself .
  2. If you had to marry someone that you presently know unromantically, and spend the rest of your life as their spouse, who would you choose?
Ew, I don't like this one. Not that it would necessarily be that awful being with that person, whomever it might be, but because it would mean not being with Shrike. That said, I really can't think of anyone specific, but I would want it to be someone that I'm good friends with, and get along well with, because that's a lot more important than those other spously things (on a day-to-day living with someone basis).

  3. If you knew that in one year you would die suddenly, would you change anything about the way you are living now?
Ew, this question is even worse than the last! I'd start by taking out a really big life insurance policy, so that Shrike and Peeper would be okay, financially. Then I'd just spend all the time I could with them, and with my other family and friends. Sure, there are a lot of things that I'd like to do or see or accomplish in life, but none are as important as that. Did I mention that I really, really, really hate this question?

Photo Hunter #53: Self

Belly Shot #1: 14 weeks, 5 days
Nothing to see here, check back in a couple of weeks

I'd like very much to claim that what you're looking at in this photo is a brand-new "baby bump" (ugh, I hate that term for some reason!) but it's pretty much just some tummy flab that was there long before Peeper was a sparkle in anybody's eye.

Over the past couple of days, though, I have started to notice that my lower belly seems to be getting firmer, so I think Peeper is finally going over the wall, my uterus is clearing my pelvic bones, and I should expect to start seeing something soon.

So, I figured I'd better go ahead and get a baseline "before" photo, before I start having something real to show off!

Wordless Wednesday #63: Pirate Ships

There's a small airport near our home, which does a lot of skydiving. You can watch them from our backyard on pretty much any nice day.

Once, when our niece was about four, we were telling her, "Look at the parachutes!" and she said, "What pirate ships?"

So, now, that's what they're called at our house.
