Weekend Dog Blog #8: Two Things

Here's a quick photo from this evening. It really doesn't do justice to what PerfectPup was doing. She really had a hold on BigGaloot's tail and was pulling for all she was worth. We couldn't believe how long it took him to react!

And a couple of unrelated stories:
Shrike reports that the pups treed a groundhog on their walk the other day, and didn't even know it. They were busy sniffing in the holes when she heard something behind her.

She saw a groundhog scurry up a tree and sit on a branch. They never even noticed it, and just kept sniffing around the holes.

We had no idea they could climb.

Another day, Shrike took a giant paper leaf bag into the backyard to fill up with leaves, grass clippings, brush etc. Of course, BigGaloot got hold of it and took off.

This bag is probably big enough for him to get inside (and he's a big dog) but he was dragging it all over the yard.

The funniest part is that PerfectPup is kind of flinchy, especially about things that rattle - like paper bags.

She even flinches when we're serving her food, as though she's afraid of the bag.

So Galoot was running all over the yard with this giant paper bag, and PerfectPup was running away from it.

Shrike said it looked like a little brother chasing his sister with a snake or something.

Weekend Dog Blog #7: This is Getting Old

There's a new rule at our house:
BigGaloot is only allowed to have "hard" toys.

Or, perhaps we'll just start handing him dollar bills to chew up.

You know, cutting out the middle man and all.

The photos below were all taken within twenty-four hours of the purchase of the toy shown.

Going . . . .

Going . . . .

Gone . . . .

Weekend Dog Blog #6: Shredder Pup

How, exactly, does something like this happen?

Ok, I figured that much, but where did he get . . .

Oh.

Weekend Dog Blog #5: Blooood!

Thursday evening, I was busily typing my post about the lesbian pregancy books when Shrike got home from work. I shouted from the office that "I'll be there in a minute," as she went to greet the dogs, who were outside.

A moment later, she came into the office and asked, "Did he bite you!?"

"No, why?"

"There's blood in the floor."

"What?!?"

Sure, enough, there were a few drops of fresh blood in the floor, near the door between the kitchen and the dogs' room sunroom.

BigGaloot was, of course, bouncing off the walls, greeting Shrike, and PerfectPup was still outside.

(She used to come running if I even whispered the words "Mom's home," but since BigGaloot came along, she waits for him to settle down a bit before she bothers coming in to see her.)

We started inspecting Galoot to find the source of blood. At first we thought it was a foot, then I heard Shrike say, "Oh my God!"

I was standing on the other side of him and couldn't see it very well, but from the amount of blood covering the side of his neck, I was expecting to see his ear hanging by a thread.

Looking closer, the ear was where it belonged, but we still couldn't find the source of the blood.

We started to wonder if it was even his - we called PerfectPup in and confirmed that she was okay, I checked all the cats (although the dogs had been outside most of the evening) and Shrike had to stop me from going out in the wet and cold to search the yard for a dead bunny.

Then we noticed that blood was dripping onto the floor, so we figured there must be a wound in there somewhere and it must still be bleeding.

We took him into the bathroom to get a better look and finally were able to see the gash nick, right at the tip of his ear.

Have you ever tried to apply direct pressure to a dog's ear? Yeah, that doesn't work so well.

We tried a wet washcloth. We tried a second wet washcloth, so we could put it on the ear, while he licked the blood off the first one. (Yeah, I know. Ew. But he was insistant.) We tried a dry towel.

No luck, he was still dripping blood and, even better, was shaking his head periodically and slinging little teeny droplets of it everywhere.

I joked that "maybe we should put flour on it?" because that's what the vet had recommended when we snipped one of PerfectPups toenails into the quick and couldn't get it to stop bleeding.

Eventually, we decided that it couldn't hurt, and gave it a try. It took a couple of dips, but it worked pretty quickly.

By that time, we'd realized that he was going to be fine, so we were able to get quite a bit of entertainment from his little white ear, and the "dog blood gravy" that we were making by mixing it with flour.

Looking at his ear today, it's kind of hard to tell, because the fur is still a bit matted in that spot (with blood and flour) but we still can't see an actual injury, so we suspect that it's probably not really even a nick (we really expected he'd be left with a little notch cut out!) but more of a scratch.

We still don't know how it happened - maybe PerfectPup got a bit rough when they were playing - or maybe she got really fed up with him and wasn't playing, maybe he caught it on any number of things in the yard - something on the fence, a tree, who knows, or maybe he scratched himself somehow.

I guess we'll never know what it was, we're just glad it turned out to be mostly a big nevermind. He sure had us worried for a while there.

Weekend Dog Blog #4: Diggity Dogs

Why, oh why, oh why-y-y-y-y must our dogs insist on digging holes in the backyard that are deep enough in which to bury themselves?

Why must they insist on locating said holes right where humans need to walk?

And - most importantly - why must they look so damned cute curled up in their cursed holes?

Weekend Dog Blog #3: A-Hiking We Shall Go

We live about thirty minutes from the Appalachian Trail. In fact, I crossed it everyday to get to OldJob.

Photo:

Shrike has a rare Friday off today, so, instead of our usual walk in the neighborhood, we decided to go for a hike, where the trail passes through a nearby state park.

I've taken a couple of really short walks on the trail before, but going in the other direction from the highway, so this was all new to me today.

The weather was beautiful, and the pups loved being out in the woods. The trail meanders along a stream and the dogs were able to wade in it a bit. BigGaloot, in particular, loves this.

We hiked for almost two hours, including a couple of rest stops. We might have stayed out longer, but the last fifteen minutes or so before we decided to turn back was a pretty steep ascent, so we decided that we were about done. Or at least, more than half done!

We will definitely have to do this again soon.

Weekend Dog Blog #2: BigGaloot Lurrrves GirlCat

BigGaloot has an unnatural attraction to his adoptive sister, GirlCat.

The funny thing is that we suspect that GirlCat kind of might not completely hate him. Maybe.

She is the most animal-oriented, and least people-oriented of the cats. She almost never gets in our laps (although she loves to be petted and, especially, to be brushed) but she seems to tolerate the dogs better than the other cats.

BoyCat, on the other hand, is the most people-oriented, the most likely to get in our laps, the only one who'll stick around if we pick him up, and he hate, hate, hates the dogs. I think he's probably scared of them. There's always a lot of hissing and spitting when they get too close to him.

MamaCat is somewhere in the middle. She's all about the lap-sitting - if it's her idea, but gets offended if we dare to think we'll pick her up or put her on our laps. She doesn't seem to be afraid of the dogs, but isn't real fond of them either. There's hissing, but not spitting.

But, back to BigGaloot and GirlCat. As you can imagine, from the photos, GirlCat is a big fan of the couch. And Galoot is a big fan of trying to eat her while she's on the couch. She usually just kind of puts up with it, but will meow when he gets a little rough.

I think it probably hurt when he bites at her body, not so much from the bite, but because I think she just has aches and pains. (She doesn't much like it when we move her around, either.)

When he really gets rough, she'll fight back and bop him on the nose. Occasionally, she'll get a mouthful of doggy-jowl.

This evening, during the encounter documented here, she bit him hard enough to make him yelp.

PerfectPup came running in to see what the problem was, got right in his face and gave him a talking to.

When she does that, we never know if she's being protective of the cats, or possessive of them, or is just jealous that Galoot is playing with them instead of with her.

Weekend Dog Blog #1: Snow Pups

I hear tell that one is supposed to blog about one's doggies on the weekend.

I don't have alot new to say about our little mutton-heads (just one of my many pet names* for them) but here are a couple of photos that I took of them on Friday.

Oh, and remember all those "Yea, it's Spring!" posts a few days ago?

Yeah, not so much anymore.

*Sidebar
My nineteen-year-old niece got a kitten for her most recent birthday. It took her a while to decide on a name for him, and at one point, she told my sister,

"Since I've been calling him 'Pookie' maybe I'll just make that his name."

My sister said, "No, 'Pookie' is fine for a pet name but it can't be his real name."

To which my niece replied, "What do you think he is?"
