Summer Vacation

I've still got a couple of days to work, but this was Peeper's first day of summer vacation, not that you could tell it from the weather.

"I can do it! Help, I can't see!"

She and I bundled up and went to opening day at the local Farmer's Market, where we bought a jar of local honey, an $8 (down from $10) brick of local raw-milk cheese, and a bunch of radishes.

From there, we walked to the library, where we turned in some (overdue) books, played a while and checked out a new stack of books. Then we dropped the books off at the car and walked down to a little Italian cafe for lunch. While we were there, Peeper spotted the giant slices of cake and torte, but I wasn't about to buy us one of those, so I told her that after lunch, we could walk to the candy store for her to pick something out. Let's see, giant slice of chocolate torte right here, versus walk a couple of blocks for a bite-sized piece of candy. I can't believe she bought it!

After "dessert" we decided to head over to the children's art studio for a couple of hours of "open art." She played with toys, dressed up, and even actually did a bit of art. This is a painting of the sky, with thunder and lightning.

All in all, it was a lovely start to the summer. (Sweatshirts and all.)

Medusa and Friends

(Another phobia-related trigger warning Anonymama. Totally mythological, of course.)

Peeper walked into the room carrying her box of "puffies" and pipe cleaners and a headband and declared "I know a great way I can be Medusa!" then proceeded to tell me how to make this headband.

"She has red eyes in the video."

Skunk!

We were all out in the backyard this afternoon when I looked at Shrike, who was on the far side, near the fence, and spotted a skunk about three feet behind her, just bopping along, pretty as you please. I said, "Mommy! Mommy! Mommy!" trying to get her attention without saying what it was, I suppose so I didn't clue the dogs in on it or something. Then I realized that was stupid and just yelled. "SKUUUNK!"

Maybe my dog thing wasn't so stupid, because as soon as I said it, Galoot came running over, grabbed it up and started shaking. I didn't want Peeper to get sprayed or to watch him kill it, so I swooped her up and ran inside, and Shrike was right behind us.

The dogs and skunk all ended up in some bushes where we couldn't see what was happening, but we heard two separate yelp/whines, and knew exactly what that meant.

The skunk was actually pretty small, probably an adolescent I suppose, so I think maybe he didn't have all his stink yet, because it turned out to be not nearly as bad as we'd feared. Shrike found the bottle of skunk destink spray that she bought the first time this happened and that took care of it.

Happy Birthday to Me!

Shrike had to work this evening, but before she left, we went out for my birthday lunch, which included this:

Peeper enjoyed it as much as I did.

My the time we got home, though, I wasn't enjoying it so much anymore, so I lay down for a bit of a nap. Peeper brought me a pillow for my knee that was bothering me, a baby blanket for my feet, gave me a stuffed toy to snuggle and read me a story. How sweet is she.

How to Cut a Watermelon

At first, I was just watching, but when she started talking about the website, I had to go get the camera.

Credit for inspiration goes to Today I Ate a Rainbow and Safe Kitchen Knife Lesson For Kids.

I guess she has a thing for cute girls named Hannah.

Happy New Year!

Our big New Years Eve plans consisted mostly of packing and preparing for our trip to Texas. Peeper and I will fly down tomorrow, Shrike will join us on Friday, we'll do the Christmas thing with my family over the weekend, and we'll all come home next Monday.

We got a gift card for TGI Friday's for Christmas, and then I got a 20% off discount via email, so that's where we headed for our "fancy" New Years Eve dinner. The card and coupon got us down to about three bucks, before the tip. Not a bad deal.

Peeper even wore a "new" outfit. (Not even actually new-to-her, but the first time she's worn it, after it waited around in the basement for a year or so after it was handed down to us, before it fit.)

How cute is it, though?!

We'll pretend that she's yelling "Happy New Year!" in this one.

And this happened at about ten after seven.

Four More Years!

That's my girl!

In case you're wondering, here's the photo from four years ago that my sister refers to in the comments. She's five days old, and we've just arrived home from the hospital:

I recommend that the more squeamish among you avert your eyes around the 3: 15 mark.

Mythology 101

After our trip to the planetarium last week, Peeper and I checked out Constellations: A Glow-in-the-Dark Guide to the Night Sky from the library.

In addition to the drawings and glow-in-the-dark stars, it includes the myths (Greek and other) behind some of the constellations.

I think she likes them. (There's some other talk before the mythology stuff starts. Just hang in there, it's pretty cute, too.)

Happy Birthday, Hannah!

Last week, I was email with Kia (The Rainbow Mom) and she mentioned that today is Hannah's ninth birthday.

When I told Peeper that, she immediately said, "I want to sing 'Happy Birthday' to her!"

So, she did.
