Daily Peep: Knee High on the Fourth of July

Peeper had a big day today.

We started with a cook out at our friends D & E's house, in celebration of both the Fourth, and E's retirement from the local police department.

Everyone was appropriately impressed with Peeper's handling of a hamburger patty (okay, a couple of quarters of a patty), forksful of potato salad and baked beans, and - a new one for her - corn on the cob.

(Don't worry, Anonymama, by the time she gummed anything off, it was creamed corn!)

D's parents were quite taken with Peeper, and her dad gave her a walking lesson.

(Please forgive all the conversation in the background.)

She also spent a good bit of time just sitting around.

And standing around. (Yes, we were spotting her very closely when she was standing. But not while sitting - she's pretty much got that one down!)

Yeah, this didn't last long. Still hates tummy time.

And for her next trick, she tackled another new food - strawberries!

(Note that we were smart enough to strip her down to a diaper first. I did not, however, strip myself down, and now my white shirt has strawberry stains on it.)

Since retirement, E is a "stay at home mom" to their new puppy. She's an Australian Shepherd / German Shepherd mix, and is three months old. She and Peeper are about the same weight.

Then we came back to town, had dinner at TGI Friday's, changed Peeper into her Star Spangled Jammies (because, oddly enough, it was getting rather chilly out), and killed some time at Target . . .

Before watching the fireworks display, from the Target parking lot - well away from the traffic and the big boom boom booms.

Happy Independence Day!

Milestone?

Today, for the first time, I had to pull Peeper's hands (then feet, then legs) out of her poopy.

Rah.

Daily Peep: Peace, Love & Cuteness

Not necessarily in that order.

The Lesbians on Aisle Nine

Sunday, after our weekly trip to TGI Friday's, we decided to get crazy and go to the grocery store instead of Target.

(I believe Peeper and I had been to Target at least three times that week, already.)

As we were shopping, Shrike whispered to me, "Did you see those two girls with the baby? I think they're like us."

No, I'd not seen them, but she said they'd just moved on to the next aisle, so I peeked around the corner.

Yep. Baby's got two mommies.

So, as we passed by them, I smiled at their baby and they smiled at Peeper, and one of the babies (with a little help from Mommy or Mama) waved at the other and someone asked, "How old is she / he?" (theirs is a boy) and one thing led to another and the next thing you know, we're exchanging phone numbers and friending each other on Facebook and last night (Shrike was at work) Peeper and I met them on the deck at our favorite dive for a late dinner and drinks.

We popped in for a few groceries and, in this tiny conservative town of ours, found a breastfeeding, cosleeping lesbian family with a baby less than a month older than Peeper.

What are the odds of that?

Spoke Too Soon!

That Daily Peep photo from the wee hours is of Peeper lying on the floor giggling, after having fallen over backwards.

That really doesn't bother her, nor does she seem to mind falling over to her side, catching herself and ending up on her tummy.

(Except, of course, that then she's mad that she's on her tummy.)

What she does mind, however, is losing her balance when standing up (despite the fact that she's holding Mama's hand!), falling over and bonking her head on the side of her crib.

That requires many tears.

Mostly from Mama.

She actually settled down pretty quickly, was laughing at a toy within moments, and seems to be none the worse for the wear this morning.

If you look very closely, she might have the slightest bit of a bump on her forehead, but it was hard to tell exactly what part of her head took the blow, so I'm not even sure about that.

I, on the other hand, freaked the fuck out.

There were tears, there was the rushing to the freezer for ice, there was cursing and the blaming of the crib.

("Why do we even own this stupid thing?!")

There was mostly the blaming of myself because, not to put too fine a point on it, but she was holding on to my hand. I was supposed to be keeping her from falling down. She fell down anyway, and hit her head.

In what universe is that not All. My. Fault?

Daily Peep: Fall Down, Go Boom

She generally takes it pretty well.

Daily Peep: Block Baby

Remember these cool blocks? She's finally showing them who's boss.

That Was, Um, Sweet?

Earlier, Peeper and Shrike were having mommy/baby time, while I had MeMeMeAllAloneWooHooNowWhatTheHellDoIDo? time, as is our habit when she gets in from work.

When I joined them in the living room and picked Peeper up, she gave me kisses.

I think.

She came at me with a wide-open mouth, as she's done a few times before.

I made a kissy-mouth, which she covered with her mouth.

And licked.

Ok, that was a little ew.

Let's try that again.

Give Mama a kiss . . .

Open mouth, kissy mouth, contact and . . . Latched and sucked on my kissy-lips.

Creep. Eeeeee.
