Forty-Five Months

Dear Peeper:
You are forty-five months old today. Three-and-three-quarters. Pretty soon, I'll just have to start saying "almost four," won't I?

One of the biggest developments this month - which I don't believe I've blogged about yet, come to think of it - is that you've decided that you want to go to school again in the fall. At the same Mother's Day Out program where you went back in March.

A couple of weeks ago, we were at the Farmer's Market and ended up walking past the church where it's held, and I said, "That's the building where you went to school."

We talked about that a little bit, and you seemed okay about it, so I said, "Just out of curiousity - they are on summer break right now, but they will start school there again in a few weeks. Would you like to try it again then?"

I was quite certain that you would say no, but I thought I'd ask. Boy was I surprised when you said, "Yes!" and when you said that you want to go there and not a different school.

So, we went home and talked to Mommy about it, and called the school, and they're holding a spot for you in the preschool class (12/1/2008 - 8/31/2007 birthdays), on Wednesday and Friday mornings.

This time, we're going to really ease into it carefully, though. We're thinking that the first week, you'll go for two hours (unless we get there to pick you up and you want to stay) and move up from there. It's a five hour day, so we're going to take our time working up to that.

I don't really know how it's going to go when it actually comes down to it. I suspect that there will be some tears on drop-off, but I really, really, really hope that you get happy pretty quickly and have fun.

Last week and this, you've gone to "summer dance" at the ballet school, and that's about how it's gone. Every day, you've been hesitant about getting dressed and heading down there. (If "hesitant" is the right word for "No, Mama! Please don't make me go to dance class!") and almost every day, you've cried (and clung to me and again with the "No, Mama, please!") when it was time to go in the room without me, but Mrs. C. reports that you always settle down pretty much as soon as the door closes, and an hour later, you come out with a big smile on your face, telling me that you had fun.

So, every day, I've made you go, and reassured you that "You might miss me a little bit, but you will have lots of fun, just like yesterday," and "I'll be right here in the waiting room."

And every day, I've felt like the meanest mother ever for making you go in that room when you were begging not to.

On the other hand, you and Mommy have had at least two more "dates" this month, during which you went out for dinner and ice cream, while I went out with some of the MOMS for drinks and such. That seems to be going very well, and - knock wood - you've not had any trouble going to sleep with Mommy when I'm not home.

Of course, if I am  home, there will be none of that. You still need your goody to go to sleep, and usually in the morning when you wake up, and often - but not always - a quickie or two during the day.

Your greatest hits from the past month:

Overheard from the bedroom, where you were jumping on the bed: Peeper: I'm having fun! Mommy: You'd better stop that. There will be no fun-having in this house! Peeper: Here goes some fun! Fun! Fun! Fun!

You couldn't play on the iPad, because it was charging, so you said, "That does it!"

You wanted to paint, which is a nakey activity at our house.

You were wearing your footy jammies, but you told me, "I unbuttoned them," and spread open unsnapped part, exposing your tummy. "Is this enough nakey?"

Talking about the chairs at the dining table, you said, "So, of course, there's two of us, so we're sittting in one, two chairs!"

You've started doing the "sad trombone" wah-wah-wahhh sound effect at appropriate times.

A couple of weeks ago, Mommy caught and released a vole. From the laundry room. You touched the cup it was in so I made you wash up. You started crying that "I wanted to keep my mouse hands!"

You and Mommy were going downstairs to play. You came back up to get a little chair (actually a clip-on highchair that you've reclaimed) and headed back to the stairs.

I said, "Mommyyy?" and she said, "I'm here. No worries."

To which you added, "Akuma atatta, Mama!" (Hakuna matata) "Means 'no worries!'"

Speaking of that, the only part of The Lion King that you've seen is the Hakuna Matata sequence. You are convinced that the baby lion's name is Akuma Atatta, and that Pumba and Timon are his parents.

You come in the office looking for your crown, and saying "I need to find something princely."

Mommy reports that she told you the other day that "You better marry someone rich so you don't have to have so much broken stuff in your house," and you replied, "No, I don't want to marry someone rich. I want to marry someone happy."

I'm hoping that you find someone who is both.

Any too many other amazing, hilarious and surprising things to remember.

As usual.

Happy 3/4 birthday, little Peep.

I love you.

Love,
Mama

Beet Chips

We first tried these last week, along with a whole rainbow of veggies, and when I posted photos on Facebook, Kia (the Rainbow Mom) asked me to do a guest post for her blog with the recipe. That will be running on Monday, but here's a sneak preview of Peeper eating some more beet chips today.

Actually, she wasn't so thrilled with this one, because it was "Not so very crispy."

Well, sorr-ee.

In Other News from the Doctor's Office

As always, they put Peeper on the scale before her exam, and it agreed with what our bathroom scale said a few days ago - 34 pounds.

That's considerably more than the 31 pounds I remembered from her last official weight, in mid-March, so I asked that they check her height as well.

She's now 37 1/2 inches tall.

I'm not sure when we got that 31-and-a-smidge weight, but at her three year well-child check, which was almost exactly nine months ago, she was 34 1/2" tall and weighed 29.2 lb.

So, in nine months, she's grown about 3 inches and gained almost 5 pounds.

False Alarm

We had a weird morning/afternoon today. Everything is absolutely fine, as it turns out, but Peeper gave us a bit of a scare earlier. Or a freak-out would be a more accurate description.

Last night, she went to bed at her normal time, 9ish, and was up for a while in the night when the dogs woke her and she was wet, so there was all that bed and jammy changing thing, and then took a while to get back to sleep solidly enough for me to get up, but nothing too out of the ordinary.

Dogs woke her AGAIN about 6:45, I took her to pee, and laid down and nursed her back to sleep. Then we both slept til 12:30!!!

Usually, she wakes by 7:30, and if we go back to bed and nurse, maybe she'll sleep til 8:30 or maybe 9 if she was up late. Never noon!

Even then, I had to wake her up, and she was still super sleepy, and asked me to carry her to the potty instead of climbing over me an running in there herself, as usual. I left the room while she was brushing her teeth, and when I came back in, she was just standing there with her head in the sink!

Then she just wanted us to hold her - either of us was fine (usually it's all about me when she's sick). She was barely whispering "yes" or "no" to our questions, and almost falling back asleep.

I've never seen her lethargic like that except when she's been throwing up.

She said she wasn't nauseated, nothing hurt, but when I asked, "Do you feel normal? she said, "No."

She did want to eat (Shrike had made mac and cheese while we were asleep) but was almost dozing off in my lap, while chewing in slow motion.

When she wanted me to carry her, I asked if it hurt when she walked, and she said yes, her legs hurt.

At that point, I'd had enough, and called the doctor's office and left a long message about it all.

They called back a while later and as soon as I hung up from scheduling the appointment, she picked up her head and started talking to us. Non-stop.

By the time we got there, she still said her knees hurt when she walked, but she was super-perky, and had eaten three small bowls of mac and cheese and most of a "squeezy" apple sauce. (That's a lot for her.)

The doctor said that everything looks normal, she might just be fighting off a bit of a virus. There's been some diarrhea going around so, so we should watch for that. (Yep, she had some after we got home.)

When I asked about the fact that a week or so ago, she had some "dribble" pee-pee accidents, she said that maybe she's got something going on with a bladder infection or maybe she's just a little irritated, so we should avoid bubble baths for now and maybe put a little Vaseline on her. Eh, I don't know, but it won't hurt.

I don't think irritation would have anything to do with how she's acting today, though!

Everyone at the doctor said that this happens all the time, that the kid is acting fine by the time they get there, and the doctor also said that if she were still acting the way we'd described, she would also be concerned, too, but seeing how she is now she's not.

We both feel pretty silly for rushing her in there, but it was really scary how lethargic she was, and then the hurting knees, for some reason, freaked me out.

I was certain that we'd at least be heading over to the lab for blood work, and when I let my head start making things up while I was getting dressed, I went and made sure that my phone and iPad chargers were where Shrike could find them if I had to send her home from the hospital to get me an overnight bag!

Neurotic much?

Now she's acting pretty normal, watching Sesame Street.

I did decide to blow off the last night of dance class this evening, just to let her take it easy. I'm sure she is thrilled about that, actually because she's cried every day when I've sent her into the room without me, although she comes out with a big smile, and the teacher says she's fine as soon as the door shuts.

Oy. This mama thing is hard.

Red Robin Tour

This morning, the MOMS Club kids took at tour of the local Red Robin restaurant.

They took us back into the kitchen, where they showed us the equipment, each kid got a soda, and then they all gloved up and put "Clucks" (chicken tenders) into the fryer basket. We watched the clucks and fries do their thing, then they plated up all the kids' meals and we ate.

Oh, and Red showed up, too, which was Peeper's favorite part, I'm sure.

Ouch!

We were in the office this morning, when Peeper wandered out of the room, I heard something make a biggish noise in the closet, and she started crying.

Turns out, she wanted a red shirt (so she could be a "giant red and blue Christmas tree," of course), so she yanked on the bottom of a red dress until the hook of the plastic hanger snapped, the dress and hanger came  flying at her, and the broken edge of the hanger scratched her face.

I guess it's time to install that Peeper-height closet rod that we've been talking about.

Today I Wore a Rainbow?

She put this outfit together herself and then said, "Look at me! I'm dressed in colors of the rainbow!"

Working

See that round green block in her hand? That's her "mouse."

She is "working on the computer for Ms. J."

(The woman that I do web development consulting for.)
