Peep Report

I just heard from the fertility clinic, and they tell us that things are "looking terrific" and all seven of our zygotes are dividing today.

They'll call tomorrow with our appointment time for transfer on Sunday, and I think we'll get another update either tomorrow or Saturday, from the PGD people, but won't have the actual PGD report (how many are chromosomally normal - we expect about half) until Sunday, just before transfer.

Shrike is doing well, too. She's still having a bit of belly pain, but it doesn't seem to be too bad. She'll be going back to work this evening, and I'm sure she's looking forward to that. (ha ha ha)

More news as we have it.

  1. Congratulations! Keep thinking positively. Will they determine sex while doing the chromosomal stuff? If so, do they put in one of each? Or what?

  2. Thanks.

Good question about the sex, and rather a frustrating answer, actually.

They don't do sex selection at our clinic, which is fine. If they were to ask us, we'd request that they transfer a> The best two, regardless of gender, and if we have a variety of equally good ones, then b> one of each, and let nature make the choice.

(Seems like we should leave something to nature here. Also, if we were to end up with two, we like the idea of one of each.)

But, not only do they not ask our opinion (which is fine) they won't even tell us what flavor(s) they've transferred, after the fact.

Of course, when the PGD doctor looks at the chromosomes, he'll know the sex of every little embryo, but he doesn't tell anybody.

Dr E won't know, no one in the room doing the transfer will know, and they won't tell us.

Now, I can understand if they don't want to say anything before transfer, so you can't try to influence what they transfer, but once they're in, I don't understand what the harm would be of telling us.

If they transfer one of each, okay, that doesn't really answer anything (even with twins, there's the possibility of identicals from one or the other) but if we knew they were tranferring two of the same sex, then we could go ahead and get our heads wrapped around either pink or blue.

Maybe I'm misunderstanding, because when I first talked to the PGD people, I thought that they might tell us after we find out that it worked, but when I asked my nurse yesterday, she said that, no, we'll have to wait til at least 20 weeks, just like everyone else.

    No fair.
