Ten on Tuesday #1

Here's another meme that I've been seeing around. It's kind of like Thursday 13, but with less answers, and the topic is provided each week.

10 Things I'd Save in a Fire
Note: I think it might be a bit naive to think that, in case of fire, one would have time to save ten things, but I'll go with it. The last three or four items might have to be left behind in a fire, but are definitely things I'd grab for a more deliberate evacuation, say, for a hurricane.

  1. Shrike
  2. Pets
  3. Pets
  4. Pets
  5. Pets
  6. Pets
  7. Our purses/wallets
  8. Important documents - vital records, powers of attorney, etc (I guess we really ought to put those in a fire-safe box.)
  9. Photos
  10. Clothes (In case of a fire while we're sleeping, this moves up the list. Nobody wants to see me standing in the street in my "jammies."

  1. I always wondered/planned what I would grab, but about ten years ago or so we had a false alarm where the smoke detector went off.

I grabbed: the cordless phone to call for help(precell phone days), Kiddo #1 (who was home sick, Kiddo #2 was at school), my purse, and our jackets (off the coatrack right by the door when the cold air hit me). That was it, nothing else entered my head.

I never thought about another single thing, just the kiddo and my purse and a way to call for help. And I turned off the heating system (which was causing the problem)as I went.

Now evacuating for a hurricane, THAT'S another story.

  2. I probably wouldn't have thought about the wallets/papers if I hadn't remembered that story!

I should have added cell phone to the list, though.

  3. After having lived as a hurricane evacuee for several weeks, our list of what to take has changed a bit. Yes, we are still concerned about the important papers and such, but now we have things like a hotplate and a pot on the list. We managed pretty well in a hotel room with a little microwave and fridge, but cooking would have been seriously more practical if we had just had a BURNER to use.

  4. Adding to Ladykay's story. Be sure the papers include the house and car insurance papers and your medical insurance cards. Also, hopefully, some cash. You run out and it is hard to cash a check. The family checkbook, stamps and envelopes with any unpaid bills. Time passes. Your address and phone book. Lots of clothes. I hate washaterias, especially in a strange town. Medicine. You run out and it may be hell locating your doctor (though not for me, of course). Books. you can only watch so much daytime TV. Valuable papers, though those should be in a safety deposit box. Pictures, pictures, pictures. A really serious answer to a playful question. Incidentally, this is addition to what you and Ladykay said. To add to her fire scare story, one thing she forgot to get out was the poor cat!

May God grant one of my most fervent prayers: that never again do we have a hurricane to evacuate for, but if we do evacuate, please do not let it come here! Been there, done that. Never again, please!

  5. Re: Evacuations - It is much easier to access cash when you have a debit card. Most of us do use those now Mama, er, Anonymous.

And cell phone with charger, especially a car charger in case you are without power. (Yes, we were without power for awhile where we evacuated TO.)

It would be a good plan to have a package with all those important papers (insurance, etc.) packed to grab easily at all times - perhaps in a fire proof box. Even if you don't have your current months bills, if you have your account number you can get the information you need to pay your bills.

And concerning my fire scare, yes, I did forget about the cat. (I wasn't planning to admit that.) I totally forgot she existed, I just worried about getting the kiddo out. Thank goodness it was a false alarm.
