Vanilla Grass

Toni asked about vanilla grass, so here's some information about it. The two small plants that we bought yesterday are pictured to the right.

Vanilla Grass, also known as Sweet Vernal Grass (scientific name is Anthoxanthum odoratum), is "a dense, clumpy grass that releases a strong vanilla fragrance when cut and dried. Useful in potpourri as it retains its scent for years. Needs full sun." (Dave's Garden)
"Vanilla Grass is especially appealing to dogs. However, like all good things, it should be offered in moderate quantities. Usually letting the dog graze is sufficient control, because the dog knows when he has had enough. Often they go to sleep afterwards. But, then dogs do that, don't they!" (Mountain Valley Growers)
Several of our neighbors have what we think is vanilla grass in their front yards, and our pups always stop to sniff it as we walk by.

Galoot ran off with one of the plants while Shrike was trying to get it in the ground, so I think he's definitely a fan.

She ended up putting them in pots and setting them out front, so they'll have a chance to get established before he destroys them.

  1. Thank you! I am going to the nursery tomorrow and was planning on asking about it. Sounds like catnip for dogs! I love the smell of vanilla- will have to get it- if they have it here in TX, that is!
